“KEEP 2-4-5 ALIVE” in the FY’07 Federal Budget

ISSUE:            Over the last two years Congress has enacted a Budget which has reduced funding for three key programs in No Child Left Behind (Titles II-D, IV-A, and V-A).  These programs are widely used by our schools across the country, and all provide for equitable services to eligible nonpublic school students.  For example, in New Jersey Title V-A funds are combined to train primary level teachers in multi-sensory reading programs.  Title IV-A and Title II-D are used in a variety of ways including counselors for substance abuse education, CPR training, and technology skills.

OUR

POSITION:    The New Jersey Catholic Conference and the New Jersey Network for Catholic School Families strongly supports restoration of funding for these programs to FY’05 levels.  The recent dramatic cuts in both programs have resulted in a loss of key benefits for both public and nonpublic school children using federal dollars.

ACTION:       Determine the use of Title II-D, Title IV-A, and Title V-A funds in your school, and make contact with the offices of the two members of the New Jersey Congressional Delegation who are part of the House Appropriations Committee:  Representative Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ-11) and Representative Steve Rothman (D-NJ-9).  Please urge them to restore the cuts that were made in these programs in President Bush’s preliminary budget for FY’07 (the 2007 – 2008 school year).  Both members of Congress may be reached as follows:
